Tournament Index Elimination Notice

The Handicap Chairmen and the Board are recommending that the Tournament Index system currently in use for the club be eliminated. That system utilizes an index based on LPGC tournament scores only, compares it to the player's USGA/GHIN index, and then uses the lower of the two to generate handicaps for tournament play. This system was adopted to rectify perceived weaknesses in the USGA/GHIN system and provide the fairest possible playing field for all members.

However, with the implementation of the World Handicap System (WHS) in 2020, we believe that many of those weaknesses have been addressed. Specifically:

Indexes are adjusted daily instead of bi-monthly, so much shorter waiting period for index movement.

Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) is now Net Double Bogey vs. Max Score Per Hole based on handicap level. This eliminates some extra strokes that had been allowed on par 3's, for example.

Exceptional Score Adjustments - 1 stroke for 7 strokes under handicap, 2 strokes for 10 strokes under handicap. This adjustment is applied immediately, and the adjustment remains in the 20 scores used for handicap calculations until it is phased out by more recent scores

Soft and Hard Caps on handicap increases in a year - if a handicap increases by 3 strokes, any further increases are reduced by an automatic calculation (Soft Cap). If a handicap increases by 5 strokes, no further increases are allowed (Hard Cap)

The elimination of the tournament index system will:

Simplify handicap calculations for tournaments for both the club and pro shop staff

Eliminate operational issues in maintaining tournament indexes

Simplify tournament score posting for members

To provide comment on the above proposed change, please provide your comments via email to the LPGC President. It is the intent of the club to implement the new rules for the upcoming 10/17/2020 tournament.
